    Night train to New Jalpaiguri

    Darjeeling Mail from Sealdah. Shared jeep from NJP takes about three hours up.

    Worth knowing

    The jeep stand is right outside. Do not pay for a private car unless the group is large.

    Tiger Hill and Batasia Loop

    Up at 4am for sunrise over Kanchenjunga. Painful, and the one thing everyone remembers.

    Watch out

    Cloud cover in monsoon means you see nothing. October and April are the safe bets.

    Tea garden and the toy train

    Happy Valley in the morning, then the short joyride steam service to Ghum.

    Down and out

    Jeep to NJP, evening train back.

Things I would tell a friend

  • Book the toy train joyride online in advance. It sells out and the counter queue is long.
